A programme by Fondazione Mediterraneo to favour the mutual understanding through meetings, images and music
From the middle of the 19th century, a sizeable Italian community settled in Tunisia, developing alongside the colonised Tunisians and the colonising French. Of some 100,000 Italians who lived in Tunisia under the French protectorate only a few hundred remain today. Nevertheless living proof of this history in Tunis is to be found in “Il Corriere di Tunisi”, Africa’s only Italian-language newspaper. Formed by the Finzi family – Livorno inhabitants who settled in Tunis from 1829 – the newspaper kept the Italian language and culture alive in the country. Today the newspaper is run by Elia Finzi, the “living memory” of the community, and her daughter Silvia, a professor at Tunis University. Modern-day Tunis, with its art deco buildings and theatres, dialect and cuisine all still bear the hallmark of Italian influence in the country. Mediterranean intellectuals like Italian-Tunisian novelist Marinette Pendola believe that the experience of Italian migrants in Tunisia is anchored in a tradition of Mediterranean openness and tolerance. Through these places, the reports by these people and by other intellectuals (Arab, Italian and French) who have studied the history of the Italians in Tunisia, as well as through photos, documents and extracts from 120 Italian newspapers in Tunisia, we will try to tell you this story and show you a community that not only belongs to the past, but which also shows how tolerance and harmony between the two shores of the Mediterranean is possible.
